I
remembered my good old high school days and I vividly
remember how we used to play cricket and foot ball by
the sea shore. Before we started every game, we used to
have a little ritual called team selection. All ten or
fifteen of us would pile up and two strong guys would
assume their captainship. I never figured out who
appointed them, it just happened. And then, moments
would arrive when each of the captains would call one by
one alternatively to their fold. When the end of ‘call’
nears, and then comes the ‘funny’ p art. There will
always be a few guys, both of the captains don’t want!
They figure out how to put him in the other team. The
captains scratch their heads, pretend not to see and
show all sorts of gimmicks to exclude some of the
‘weakest’ guys from their teams. However, in the end
these few will be chosen anyway…but were barely counted!
I never ever thought how it is to be at that position…
to be called and counted at last. I was never at that
position, I was always called first or sometimes I was
the caller. I had no idea how it is to be called at last
or barely counted as a team member until recently when I
met Kate. When all of us decided to play a game one week
end, Kate was also invited to play by our friends. She
refused; her eyes became moist and tears started
dripping from her eyes. She said in a feeble voice ‘I am
not good at games; you guys go ahead and have a
wonderful time’. I tried to find out why she was so
shaken. I spoke to her and found out the reason. She was
always picked at last and no one wanted her in their
teams. They always thought that she was a worthless
burden for the team. When crunch situations came she
could not deliver and was always blamed for any loss.
She stopped playing as she could no longer stand the
yells of her team mates! I wondered what I used to think
as ‘funny’ is in fact no so ‘funny’.
As our pastor was preaching on the life of David, in a
flash I remembered Kate and thought David was after all
one like Kate! When the big man of the country, Samuel
was coming to his house, Jessie never even thought that
David was that very important. He lined up all the
smart, intelligent, beautiful, mature, strong and
powerful sons! David was barely counted. May be… Jessie
thought that David was unworthy to be displayed before a
Man of God. Perhaps, David was young, immature, and weak
and lacked the required etiquette. Whatever may be the
reason, he was left out and his family pretended he
never existed.
I could very well imagine what sort of mental trauma,
David would have gone through! Amazingly, God saw the
potential in him and knew how to make use of David! God
gave a tap on the shoulders of confused Samuel and said
‘Anoint him, he is mine’. Samuel obeyed and history
changed! David delighted in his Lord God and considered
Him his asset. God’s anointing was upon David and he
became a smart young man, who was powerful, strong,
wise, influential and a great warrior. God wanted a man
after His own heart, David became one; Israel wanted a
dynamic king, David became one; Nation wanted a giant
killer, David became one; people wanted a hero to sing
praise for, David became one.
My friends, are you barely counted? Do people pretend
that you did not exist! Don’t sit in a corner and shed
tears…wake up! Do not be discouraged when you are pushed
around by others as if you are nothing. Bible says ‘let
the weak say I am strong’. God brought about a total
transformation in the life of David. He can do that in
your life too. May be you are the least important in the
eyes of your classmates and friends, do not be
depressed. In His time God will make you counted. Ask
for His grace and anointing in your life and He has
promised to lift you up. Remember David! He was counted,
counted by a nation!
