MINISTRY RESCUES WOMEN IN RED LIGHT DISTRICT
Mumbai, 27 August 2009: Freedom is in
sight for the nearly 200,000 victims of the flesh trade
in Mumbai’s red light district. India Partners has been
building relationships with these women for the last
nine years, working toward the goal of rescuing them and
their children from prostitution. The organization
works in eight different red light areas in Mumbai. It
provides counseling, health services, education, child
protection, and spiritual guidance.

“CHRISTIAN WALK BIBLE” RELEASED IN BANGALORE
Bangalore, 26 August 2009: A new Bible
that aims to edify Christians reading Scriptures was
released by Ven. Babu Upadeshi, the president of
Inter-Denominational Christian Fellowship (IDFC), in
Bangalore.The ‘Christian Walk Bible’ – dubbed as India’s
first English Study Bible in the King James Version –
was drawn up to lead Christians “to a life of holiness
through fasting prayer, and to enlighten, encourage and
empower our walk with Christ.”

PERSECUTION REPORT IN TWO STATES OF INDIA
Anti-Christian people from the Moukahali Gram Panchayat
repeatedly attacked the Christians and threatened to
kill them if they continue to practice their faith in
Chok Borhampur Village, Bishnupur, West Bengal.
According to an EFI source, on August 20, about 15 anti-
Christian people armed with knives, lathis and iron rods
shouting anti- Christian’s slogans attacked a Christian
identified as Khagen Majhi and threatened him of
‘incidents like Orissa’s Kandhamal situation in West
Bengal’ and to disown the Christian faith or face dire

SC: DO NOT IMPOSE “SUN WORSHIP” ON STUDENTS
Bhopal, Aug 28 (IANS): The Madhya Pradesh
High Court in an interim order Friday directed the state
government not to force educational institutions to
conduct the yoga exercise suraya namaskar, or salutation
to the sun. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) state
government had two years ago made ’surya namaskar’
compulsory in schools and colleges - which the
minorities, Christians and Muslims, protested as an
attempt to impose Hindu rituals on students of minority
communities.

MADHYA PRADESH ISAIMAHASANGH BEGINS PREPARATIONS FOR
LOCAL BODY ELECTIONS
Bhopal, 7 September 2009: Madhya Pradesh
Isai Mahasangh,(IMS), organized one day training for
Christian aspirants in the forthcoming local body
elections in November. Over hundred persons have
registered so far with the IMS. Kurishinkal Josy, State
president of IMS, said,” As we did in the last Assembly
and Lokh Sabha elections we are trying to put up a
formidable front to lobby for more seats.” The presence
of three Christian Members of Legislative Assembly (MLAs),
and senior leaders have infused enthusiasm among the
aspirants belonging to IMS. All the three MLAs belong to
the Congress Party.

SIX MORE SENTENCED FOR ATTACKS ON CHRISTIANS
9 September 2009: An Orissa court has
sentenced another six people to four years imprisonment
for their involvement in violence against Christians a
year ago. Additional Sessions Judge Sobhan Kumar Das of
a fast-track court at Phulbani in Kandhamal district
passed the sentences to Kiringa Kanhar, Lasia Kanhar,
Gananath Kanhar, Lankeswar Kanhar, Naresh Kanhar and
Gorekh Pradhan.

AN YEAR LATER GFA MISSIONARIES BRINGING HOPE TO
SURVIVORS

There is both good news and bad news coming out of
Orissa, India, one year after Hindu radicals went on a
bloody rampage that left 50,000 Christians fleeing for

NO “SMALL” TROUBLE IN KERALA!
Alcohol sales during the Onam festival season in Kerala
made the people of Kerala poorer by Rs. 34.13 crore and
the Kerala government richer by half that amount. The
Kerala State Beverages Corp (KSBC), the sole wholesaler
of Indian made foreign liquor (IMFL) and beer in the
state, conceded that the sales was 49 percent more than
what was sold on the first day of Onam festival last
year.

MOTHER TERESA’S 100TH B’DAY PREPARATION BEGINS ON
DEATH ANNIVERSARY
The Missionaries of Charity around the world Saturday
observed the 12th death anniversary of its founder
Mother Teresa and began preparations for her birth
centenary next year. Sister Prema, the superior-general
of the Missionaries of Charity in Kolkata (Calcutta)
said: “A week ago, we began the preparation for
celebration of Mother Teresa’s birth centenary next
year. Today, we commemorate the 12th anniversary of her
death. The heroic sanctity of her life assures us that
her death on earth meant her birth in heaven,” she said
in a statement.

YSR BURIED ACCORDING TO CHRISTIAN RITES
The state funeral of Y S Rajasekhara Reddy took place in
his native Pulivendula town in Cuddapah district
according to Christian rites. Sources said thousands of
mourners packed into a stadium in Hyderabad where
Reddy’s body was kept before it was flown in an army
helicopter to his hometown Pulivendula for the burial on
his family estate.

The tragic death of Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y S
Rajasekhara Reddy has deeply grieved churches in India
who venerates the politician as a champion of the poor
and dispossessed. The National Council of Churches in

death of the Christian politician who was a “true leader
with determination and conviction.”

AICC WELCOMES AP RESOLUTION SUPPORTING DALIT
CHRISTIANS
The All India Christian Council on Thursday welcomed the
resolution adopted by the Andhra Pradesh Assembly
seeking SC status for Dalit Christians. Thanking former
Chief Minister YS Rajasekhara Reddy, the Council hailed
the resolution as an “undoing of a historical error on
the Dalits and on their freedom of choice and
conscience.”

GRAVES OF THREE MISSIONARIES, INCLUDING WILLIAM
CAREY, RESTORED
Kolkatta, 2 September 2009: The Kolkata
Municipal Corporation (KMC) spent Rs 20 lakh to restore
the graves of three very important missionaries in India
- William Carey, Joshua Marshman and William Ward. The
decaying cemetery in Hooghly’s Serampore, according to
the Times of India, was lying in complete neglect for
over 150 years till the West Bengal Heritage Commission
(WBHC) took notice.

MADHYA PRADESH’S PRAYER ORDER TO BE CHALLENGED
9 September 2009 : A group of
socio-cultural organisations in Madhya Pradesh Saturday
said they would file a petition in the high court
demanding that the compulsory recitation of ‘bhojan
mantra’ prayers before the mid-day meal in schools be
immediately stopped. The decision came after the groups
failed to get an appointment from state Education
Minister Archana Chitnis to discuss the issue.

MISSION GROUP CONCERNED OF NAXALITES IN JHARKHAND
Millions of residents of Jharkhand, India, are facing
illness, droughts and struggles with Naxalites, a Maoist
rebel group. So far, cerebral malaria and diarrhea have
claimed 12 lives in a village of Jharkhand. Seventy
people are said to have suffered from these diseases,
but a Gospel for Asia correspondent said officials are
“turning a blind eye” to the occurrences. The region is
known to be remote and an area of primitive tribes, with
hardly any transportation capable of reaching the
jungle- and hill-covered areas.

CHRISTIANS IN HIDING IN
KARNATAKA
Hindu radicals on August 9 disrupted the worship service
of Indian Missionary Service and beat up Pastor V. James
in Gulbarga, Karnataka. Rev. Noel Kotian, an EFI
correspondent reported that around 10 a.m., about 20
Hindu extremists shouting anti- Christian slogans barged
into the Sunday worship service, accused Pastor V. James
of forceful conversion and assaulted him.

PASTOR FALSELY ACCUSED OF MURDER IN MP
Bhopal: Religious bigots in the village of
Mehendi Kheda are accusing Pastor Kamlesh Tahed (32) and
three other local Christians of murdering a young man
who was killed in a fight between two local clans,
according to reports. On August 8, 2009 Roop Singh Baria
(22) was killed during violence between the Baria and
the Tahed clan over Rs.1,000 which had been borrowed by
one of the Tahed family members.

CHURCH BURNED IN ANDHRA PRADESH
Hyderabad: The Best Friends Church
building in the village of Mahasamudram in the state was
burned to the ground at approximately 10:30 p.m. on
August 20, 2009 by suspected Hindu activists.
