PASTOR & WIFE DIE IN HOME FIRE IN CHICAGO
Chicago, (IANS): An Indian couple, hailing
from Kerala, were killed Monday in a fire that broke out
in their home here. Sixty-nine year old P.Y. Philipose,
a pastor, and his wife Aleykutty Yohannan, 65, died as a
fire engulfed their residence located in Des Plaines
area in the outskirts of Chicago, media reports said on
15 September.

AN OUTREACH WITH A DIFFERENCE
USA: Sunday worshippers at Westgate
Assembly in Salem, Oregon, this summer have been honking
their horns and flashing their lights in lieu of
clapping. Westgate added an 8:30 a.m. drive-in service
in addition to its 10:30 a.m. indoor worship service. As
cars enter the parking lot, attendants direct occupants
to a drive- through for free coffee and doughnuts.
Churchgoers receive a packet with song lyrics, sermon
materials, a portable Communion container and, if
needed, a kids’ Bible story and activity with crayons.

AG BECOMES MEMBER OF HISPANIC NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF
EVANGELICAL
USA: The Assemblies of God is now a member
group of the Hispanic National Association of
Evangelicals, an affiliate group of the National
Association of Evangelicals (NAE). NAE is an association
that includes 60 denominations with about 45,000
churches. Dr. George O. Wood, as general superintendent
of the Assemblies of God, serves on the Board of
Directors of NAE. He will also serve on the advisory
board of the Hispanic National Association of
Evangelicals.

ARCHBISHOP: NUCLEAR WEAPONS A THREAT TO FAITH
Canterbury: Dr Rowan Williams is visiting
the country to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the
Anglican Church in Japan. During an Act of Remembrance
at the epicentre of the atomic bomb blast in Nagasaki,
the Archbishop quoted the Catholic writer Ronald Knox
who said in 1945 that the atomic bomb was an attack on
faith, hope and love – “an attack on the central virtues
of Christian existence,” the Archbishop added.

BECOMES INFAMOUS FOR PRAYING FOR DEATH OF PRESIDENT
OBAMA
USA: A controversial Arizona minister who
prays for the death of President Obama has attracted
attention from the Secret Service to a small group of
protesters who hold regular demonstrations outside his
church. The Rev. Steven Anderson quoted passages from
the Old Testament to the congregation of his Faithful
Word Baptist Church about the kinds of people God hates
in Tempe on August 16, 2009. Anderson then told
worshippers he interprets those passages to include Mr.
Obama and that he prays for the president’s death.

RELICS
OF ANCIENT SYNAGOGUE FOUND IN ISRAEL
Jerusalem: In what was slated to be the
site of a new 122-room hotel, archaeologists say they
have discovered one of the world’s oldest synagogues in
Northern Israel. The site, which was unearthed as
preparations were being made for construction of the
hotel near the Sea of Galilee, is believed to date back
some 2000 years from 50 BCE to 100CE.

OFFICIALS FACING PUNISHMENT FOR PRAYING GETS SUPPORT
FROM LAWMAKERS
USA: Two Florida school officials facing
possible jail terms for praying in the presence of
students are getting the support of more than 60 members
of Congress. Some of those members, who signed a letter
of support and sent it to the two school officials on
September 14, 2009, took to the House floor later to
denounce what they called a “criminalization of prayer”
that “tramples on the First Amendment rights” of
Christians.

CANADA’S HUMAN RIGHTS HATE SPEECH LAW RULED
UNCONSTITUTIONAL
Ottawa: In an astonishing decision, the
Canadian Human Rights Tribunal ruled on September 2 that
Section 13, Canada’s human rights hate speech law, is an
unconstitutional violation of the Charter right to free
expression because of its penalty provisions. Section
13(1) of the Canadian Human Rights Act is an anti-hate
law that was conceived in the 1960s to target racist
telephone hotlines and then expanded in 2001 to include
the Internet. For the last decade, one man, Ottawa
lawyer Richard Warman, has been its almost exclusive
complainant.

NEW “STONING” LAW IN INDONESIA
The law - which also allows punishments of up to 400
lashes for child rape, 100 lashes for homosexual acts
and 60 lashes for gambling - was passed unanimously on
Monday by lawmakers in the region at the northern tip of
Sumatra island, according to Agence-France Presse. The
US-based International Christian Concern has requested
Christians to pray for the believers in Aceh province.

WORLD’S OLDEST PERSON GERTRUDE BAINES DIES AT 115
Los Angeles: Gertrude Baines, the world’s
oldest known person who once quipped she had won the
genetic lottery, died on September 4, 2009 at a nursing
home. She was 115. Baines likely suffered a heart
attack, but an autopsy will be conducted to confirm the
cause of death, said her longtime physician, Dr. Charles
Witt. “I saw her two days ago, and she was just doing
fine,” Witt said. “She was in excellent shape. She was
mentally alert. She smiled frequently.”
