LOVE-STRUCK HARYANA GIRL MASSACRE 7 OF FAMILY
ROHTAK: A sense of outrage has gripped the Kaboolpur village of Rohtak district where a teenaged girl in collusion with her lover allegedly murdered seven members of her family on September 14 following opposition to the couple’s affair because of their same ‘gotra’. A day after the couple’s arrest, the shocked relatives of the girl demanded that the two should be hanged. READ MORE

MOBILE NUMBER PORTABILITY IN METROS BY DEC 31
New Delhi: Mobile number portability (MNP) will be implemented from December 31 in metros and category ‘A’ service areas, and by 20th March, 2010, in rest of the country, telecom regulator TRAI said. The MNP facility will enable subscribers to retain their cell phone numbers even after changing service providers. READ MORE

BIBLE SOCIETY OF INDIA RELEASES ESV STUDY BIBLE
New Delhi: Another feather in the cap of Bible Society of India, the English Standard Version Study Bible was released on a solemn occasion held at the Speaker’s hall of the Constitution Club, New Delhi. Lt. Governor Tejendra Khanna blessed the occasion as the Chief Guest for the occasion. NOT TO CHALLENGE DELHI HIGH COURT ON GAY RIGHTS: UNION CABINET
New Delhi: A divided Union Cabinet formally announced its decision not to challenge Delhi High Court order legalising homosexuality before the Supreme Court. The Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, decided to play it safe after some senior members expressed reservations about the political impact of legalising gay sex and decided to leave a decision on article 377 to the Supreme Court, which will hear the case on October 1. PANEL FOR AMENDMENT TO CHRISTIAN DIVORCE LAW
The Law Commission has recommended to the Union government to amend the law to empower a deserted Christian woman to file a petition to divorce her NRI husband, which otherwise is barred in the existing Act enacted during the British rule 150 years ago. In its report, Law Commission chairman A R Laxmanan said: “The Law Commission has come to the conclusion that Section 2 of the Divorce Act, 1869, insofar as it concerns the jurisdictional rule in regard to petitions for divorce, is not only not in tune with the present times but is also harsh upon Christian women in India.” READ MORE

YSR REDDY'S DEATH CALLED DIVINE PUNISHMENT
New Delhi: September 14 – Hindu nationalists are calling the helicopter-crash death of Andhra Pradesh state’s chief minister, a Christian, divine punishment for his so-called conversion agenda. The same allegation of a “conversion agenda” fueled persecution in the state for more than five years. Yeduguri Sandinti Rajasekhara Reddy, a second-generation Christian in the Church of South India, and four officials were confirmed dead when their helicopter was found on Sept. 3 in the state’s dense forest area of Nallamalla. MEMBERS OF RS SEEK SPECIAL LAW TO COMBAT HONOUR KILLINGS
New Delhi:
The government said it deplored crimes committed allegedly to uphold the honour of the family or the victim or women in general as members in the Rajya Sabha across the political spectrum expressed outrage at recent incidents, demanding special laws to tackle the problem. The Home Minister P. Chidambaram told the House that the government would examine whether `honour killing’ could be defined separately, while urging the States to investigate, prosecute and punish the people involved in with such crime through fast track. “In a few cases if exemplary punishment can be handed out to perpetrators that will send a message…,” he said.

FIVE SENTENCED FOR KILLING PASTOR IN ORISSA
Bhubaneshwar: A fast-tract court in Orissa on September 23, 2009 sentenced five people to life imprisonment for murdering a pastor in Kandhamal violence against Christians a year ago. Additional Sessions Judge Sobhan Kumar Das of the Fast-track Court - I at district head-quarters of Phulbani sentenced Sabita Pradhan, Papu Pradhan, Abinash Pradhan, Dharmaraj Pradhan and Mania Pradhan to life imprisonment and slapped a fine of Rs.5,000 each on them, special public prosecutor B.K. Pattnaik was quoted as saying by Indo-Asian News Service. READ MORE

CHRISTIANS WANT VOICE, TICKETS
Mumbai: Christians have asked for adequate representation among candidates running for the assembly elections . The All India Christian Council (AICC) has asked Congress president Sonia Gandhi to nominate at least nine members from the community in Maharashtra, including three from Mumbai, for the October 13 elections. John Dayal, activist secretary general, AICC, said that the council had appealed to not just the Congress president , but the heads of all political parties for adequate representation for Christians among candidates. Bangalore: A Christian College in Mangalore has launched a community radio station that apart from being educative will vie to spread communal harmony in the backdrop of conflicts between religious groups. PASTOR & WIFE DIE IN HOME FIRE IN CHICAGO
Chicago, (IANS): An Indian couple, hailing from Kerala, were killed Monday in a fire that broke out in their home here. Sixty-nine year old P.Y. Philipose, a pastor, and his wife Aleykutty Yohannan, 65, died as a fire engulfed their residence located in Des Plaines area in the outskirts of Chicago, media reports said on 15 September. USA: Sunday worshippers at Westgate Assembly in Salem, Oregon, this summer have been honking their horns and flashing their lights in lieu of clapping. Westgate added an 8:30 a.m. drive-in service in addition to its 10:30 a.m. indoor worship service. As cars enter the parking lot, attendants direct occupants to a drive- through for free coffee and doughnuts. AG BECOMES MEMBER OF HISPANIC NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF EVANGELICAL
USA: The Assemblies of God is now a member group of the Hispanic National Association of Evangelicals, an affiliate group of the National Association of Evangelicals (NAE). NAE is an association that includes 60 denominations with about 45,000 churches. Dr. George O. Wood, as general superintendent of the Assemblies of God, serves on the Board of Directors of NAE. Canterbury: Dr Rowan Williams is visiting the country to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Anglican Church in Japan. During an Act of Remembrance at the epicentre of the atomic bomb blast in Nagasaki, the Archbishop quoted the Catholic writer Ronald Knox who said in 1945 that the atomic bomb was an attack on faith, hope and love – “an attack on the central virtues of Christian existence,” the Archbishop added. MINISTER BECOMES INFAMOUS FOR PRAYING FOR DEATH OF PRESIDENT OBAMA
USA: A controversial Arizona minister who prays for the death of President Obama has attracted attention from the Secret Service to a small group of protesters who hold regular demonstrations outside his church. The Rev. Steven Anderson quoted passages from the Old Testament to the congregation of his Faithful Word Baptist Church about the kinds of people God hates in Tempe on August 16, 2009. RELICS OF ANCIENT SYNAGOGUE FOUND IN ISRAEL
Jerusalem: In what was slated to be the site of a new 122-room hotel, archaeologists say they have discovered one of the world’s oldest synagogues in Northern Israel. The site, which was unearthed as preparations were being made for construction of the hotel near the Sea of Galilee, is believed to date back some 2000 years from 50 BCE to 100CE. READ MORE

OFFICIALS FACING PUNISHMENT FOR PRAYING GETS SUPPORT FROM LAWMAKERS
USA: Two Florida school officials facing possible jail terms for praying in the presence of students are getting the support of more than 60 members of Congress. Some of those members, who signed a letter of support and sent it to the two school officials on September 14, 2009, took to the House floor later to denounce what they called a “criminalization of prayer” that “tramples on the First Amendment rights” of Christians. CANADA’S HUMAN RIGHTS HATE SPEECH LAW RULED UNCONSTITUTIONAL
Ottawa: In an astonishing decision, the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal ruled on September 2 that Section 13, Canada’s human rights hate speech law, is an unconstitutional violation of the Charter right to free expression because of its penalty provisions. Section 13(1) of the Canadian Human Rights Act is an anti-hate law that was conceived in the 1960s to target racist telephone hotlines and then expanded in 2001 to include the Internet. For the last decade, one man, Ottawa lawyer Richard Warman, has been its almost exclusive complainant. READ MORE

NEW “STONING” LAW IN INDONESIA
The law - which also allows punishments of up to 400 lashes for child rape, 100 lashes for homosexual acts and 60 lashes for gambling - was passed unanimously on Monday by lawmakers in the region at the northern tip of Sumatra island, according to Agence-France Presse. WORLD’S OLDEST PERSON GERTRUDE BAINES DIES AT 115
Los Angeles: Gertrude Baines, the world’s oldest known person who once quipped she had won the genetic lottery, died on September 4, 2009 at a nursing home. She was 115. Baines likely suffered a heart attack, but an autopsy will be conducted to confirm the cause of death, said her longtime physician, Dr. Charles Witt. “I saw her two days ago, and she was just doing fine,” Witt said. “She was in excellent shape. She was mentally alert. She smiled frequently.” READ MORE
