WHAT IS THAT IN YOUR HAND?

- Pastor M.K.Babu

Then the LORD said to him,
“What is that in your hand?”
“A staff,” he replied. (Exo 4:2).

Moses had but a staff in his hand when he encountered God on Mount Horeb. Those were the days Moses was tendering the flock of his father-in-law Jethro. The initial stage of his life was spent in royal style; he could even have become the king of Egypt. His nimble fingers were well trained in handling swords and shields just as well as they could wield the scribes pen and papyrus. He knew how to fight battles and to run an efficient national administration. Forty years had passed after he left Egypt. His life in the Egyptian palace remained in his memory. Age had taken its toll and he was weak in his body too. The most powerful and energetic period of his life had been spent tending sheep.

Moses lacked confidence and was apprehensive when God came down to meet with him. His unwillingness to go back to Egypt for the mission of redeeming the Israel from the bondage Pharaoh was evident from the excuses he came up with. Apparently, the divine intervention in Moses’ life revealed the plan and purpose of God for him.

God works in our lives in mysterious ways. Though there were thousands of young, bold and energetic men among the Israelites in Egypt, He came down to Moses who lacked confidence and strength, living hundreds of miles away in a strange land. The word of God says: “For God’s gifts and his call are irrevocable (Rom 11:29). God begins His work in us when we become zero in every area of our life.

Therefore, God wished to convince Moses about his calling and election on his life. Many boast about being a “self-made man”. A child of God cannot use such a phrase; for God is the Maker of everyone. In whatever condition and situation we are in it is God’s plan for us to be there. If we feel unsatisfied and unsuccessful in the situation it is high time for us to search our failures and disobedience. Fear of failure and troubles hold back many from attempting what God has purposed for their lives. Failure is not the antonym of success; rather, it is one of the steps that lead to success. God can convert our stumbling blocks to stepping stones.

God was neither excited about the experience that Moses had in the royal palace of Egypt nor in his occupation in his in-law’s land of Midian. God chooses a person — not his profession and belongings. Certainly, all that can bring glory to God if the person in question is willing to submit everything to God. Possessions and talents are immaterial without a divine “Unction.”

When Moses was unenthusiastic to go for the mission, God wanted to ignite him. He chose the staff, the very staff that symbolised his profession and life. Moses carried it all the time; it had become a part of his life. God asked Moses: what is that in your hands? Moses answered that it was his staff. God touched that staff and made it a supernatural medium for performing miracles.

God used the same staff to perform miracles and to send plagues on Egypt. (Ex. 4:17, 7:10, 7:20, 8:5, 8:17, 9:23, 10:13). For God had touched that staff and sanctified it for His purpose and it was His staff. Moses understood that it was no more his staff but God’s. (Ex. 4:20, 17:9).

This same staff God used to divide the Red Sea for the Israelites to walk through on dry ground. When the people needed water, God asked the Moses to strike a rock with the same staff.

There was once a battle with the Amalakites. Moses knew that if he stood on the mountain of God holding the same staff, God would give them victory.

You might be thinking that there is nothing special in you to make you a mighty servant of God. He is not demanding anything special from you. Rather, give to God what you have in your hands. God can touch it and work through that ‘staff’. God’s work in and through you starts with whatever you already have in your hands.

Find what is yours, lay hold of it, and run with it. You are not going to run far with what belongs to someone else.
