ROBUST GOVERNANCE, NOT POPULISM, NEED OF THE HOUR
New Delhi: The Congress is gaining confidence. Recent assembly election results once again prove that it need not turn to opportunistic and caste-based forces to stay in power. If, in the days to come, this new confidence emboldens it to strictly abide by the Constitution rather than pursue populist policies then it augurs well for the nation and its people. Any ruling party is forced to accommodate conflicting interests in its efforts to retain power. The Congress party, in the process, has often sacrifices principles of justice and equality. READ MORE

DR. DANIEL PASSES THE BATON TO DR SUNIL ANAND AT TLMI
NEW DELHI: The Leprosy Mission India has experienced a change of guard with Dr Sunil Anand replacing Dr Jeyakumar Daniel as its new Director on September 22. Outgoing director Dr Daniel was given a rousing farewell in a function organized at Habitat Centre in New Delhi on September 21. Induction ceremony of incoming Director Dr Sunil Anand was held at Bible Bhavan in New Delhi on September 22 in the presence of TLM India staff, TLMI members, government officials and well-wishers.

EMERGENCE OF NEWER MILITANT GROUPS CAUSES ANXIETY AMONG INDIAN CHRISTIANS
MUMBAI/PUNE, October 26 (CDN) – The mushrooming of newer and deadlier Hindu right wing groups has become a cause for concern for India’s Christian minority, which has faced severe persecution for over a decade. At an ecumenical meeting held in New Delhi last Saturday, the secretary general of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India, Archbishop Stanislaus Fernandes, said the rise of fundamentalism was “seriously worrying” the church in India. VETERAN CHRISTIAN PROMOTED TO GLORY AT 104
Trivandrum (Kerala): A pioneer of church planting and veteran believer, Job Deacon was promoted to glory at the age of 104 on 2nd October. Hundreds of believers and ministers attended his funeral at A. G. Church, Nedumkuzhi on October 3, 2009. Bro. L. Sam, Pastor T.J.Rajan and other leaders spoke about his great services to the gospel. The months-long communal violence in Kandhamal has grabbed the attention of Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) which purposes to introduce vocational education and job placement for poor families in the district. AGNI YOUTH CAMP CONCLUDED
Varanasi: The Assemblies of God Northern India region’s Easter Uttar Pradesh youth camp concluded on 29 September 2009. The theme for the camp was taken from Jesus’ promise to his apostles: “You shall receive power.” Around 300 young people from 18 districts of Uttar Pradesh (UP) participated in the camp that began on 28 September. They participated in various activities and competitions. Fifty youths consecrated themselves for Christian ministry. READ MORE

CHRISTIAN GROUPS CONDEMN ATTACK ON PASTORS IN AP
Two major Christian advocacy groups have condemned the opprobrious attack on three pastors and a pregnant wife by Hindutva extremists in Andhra Pradesh on Sunday. The Global Council of Indian Christians and the All India Christian Council deplored the Oct. 18 attack on New Jerusalem Church by a group of Hindutva extremists who beat Pastors Philip, Timothy and Siluvai Kumar, and also abused women and destroyed Christian literature. KERALA CHURCH OFFERS SIMPLE BURIAL FOR SUICIDE VICTIMS
The Synod of the SyroMalabar Church in Kerala has decided to give a ‘decent burial’ to those who commit suicide, and in case of a scandalous suicide, not even that. The Synod, in a circular after its August 17-28 meeting, said it was willing to give a simple form of burial to those who commit suicide, which is considered evil in Christianity. READ MORE

“SECOND BATTLE” OF SANITATION, INCOME AND SHELTER IN SOUTHERN INDIA
Loss of shelter, sanitation and sources of income are the biggest problems facing survivors of the worst floods in southern India in 100 years, says Sushant Agrawal, director of an ACT International member in India. After surviving the floodwaters, people now face the second battle of threats to their health and wellbeing. “The most important thing now is shelter,” says Sushant Agrawal, who is also ACT International moderator. “Houses are very badly damaged, especially those in the most remote areas which are made of stone, mud and banana leaves. Everything is gone.”

JOB DEACON: CONTINUING HIS LONG JOURNEY OF FAITH AT 103
Job Deacon departed for his heavenly abode on 2nd October after finishing a life of more than 100 years walking with Jesus Christ on the face of the earth. The feature is developed from an interview with him recently. Anyone who has visited Nedumkuzhi AG Church in Kerala knows Job Deacon. One of the early members of that church, this honourable father is now 103. Though he is 103, his face doesn’t betray the weight of his age. CHRISTIANS DIVIDED OVER CRUMB’S COMIC BOOK BIBLE
The counterculture American cartoonist Robert Crumb has taken on arguably his most controverisal work yet, by producing an illustrated version of the Book of Genesis. Crumb, best known for his 1960s X-rated comic strip Fritz the Cat, has spent the past five years working on the new book, which illustrates the first 50 chapters of the Bible. READ MORE

The head of the World Council of Churches preached to a North Korean congregation emphasizing the importance of cooperation and unity in a country known for its reclusiveness and for having the most heavily militarized border in the world. California (USA): New research conducted indicates that living in a married two parent household is a key factor in a student¹s academic success, but there are ways that single parents can narrow the gap. In a speech before the Centers for Disease Control of the Department of Health and Human Services, William Jeynes, professor at California State University at Long Beach and a nonresident scholar at Baylor University, shared that the farther away from a two biological parent family structure, the greater the risk for the child. 'BLASPHEMY LAW ROOT CAUSE OF VIOLENCE AGAINST PAKISTAN CHRISTIANS’
Mr.George Murad, a prominent Pakistani Christian in the United States had said the “blasphemy law is the root cause of violence against minority Christians in Pakistan”. The 60-year-old, born in a famous Christian village Khushpur in district Faisalabad in Punjab province, who immigrated to the States in 1999, in an interview with Pakistan Christian Post said if the blasphemy law is abolished altogether, “it will create harmony in society and respect for other religions which shall prevent false accusations of blasphemy on Christians. INDIA HEADING FOR DIABETES EXPLOSION, WARNS GLOBAL MEET
MONTREAL: India leads the world in the looming epidemic of diabetes, the 20th annual World Diabetes Congress of the International Diabetic Federation (IDF) was told. In its annual report, the IDF said India currently has the highest number of 50.8 million people suffering from diabetes, followed by China with 43.2 million and the US with 26.8 million. The report projected 58.7 million diabetes cases in India by 2010 - almost 7 per cent of its adult population. READ MORE

BIBLE MARATHON
London: Christians in Frome are undertaking an unusual marathon - reading the bible non-stop for 76 hours. Over four days, 150 people aged from nine to 90 will complete the reading in slots lasting 15 minutes. The event is being organised by Frome Area Churches Together and will raise £1000 for the Anglican Archbishops’ Appeal for Zimbabwe. “It’s going to be quite an undertaking,” said Reverend David Brinn, Churches Together chairman. The marathon, which comprises of 66 books of the bible read in 300 sessions, will finish on Sunday, 11 October. READ MORE

New York (USA): The first one was in Lausanne, Switzerland, in 1974. The second was in Manila in 1989. The third will be in Cape Town in 2010. I’m talking about the massive worldwide conferences on evangelism that began as the brainchild of evangelist Billy Graham, along with British Anglican theologian John Stott and Australian Anglican Bishop Jack Dain.
