 JESUS GREW UP IN WISDOM
- Beena Didi

Our language teacher was a nun. She used to walk around with a long stick in her hand to discipline children. She would go to the classes and scream: “Silence.” Small children, got scared, and would run to their respective places and sit down. She taught us very well. I used to do all the home-works neatly, because I was scared of her. The nun had a loud voice, and she taught us very thoroughly so that we would not forget anything. When she checked our home-works, sometimes she would call my name to see my notebook. She liked to see my neat work, and also to see my book wrapped in Russian calendar paper. Later when I reached tenth class also, she came in search of me to know how my studies were going.

Earlier, in my school days we learned only what was taught in the school. During those days only a few students were there. Even 60% marks was considered very good marks, and you could pass through any competitive examination with that knowledge. But now the time has changed. Now children are naturally more brilliant, and their capacity to learn is also more. Most of today's students can speak different languages, and they know much more about life than what we used to know. Today only if a child is having excellent capacity, he or she can pass competitive tests.

The media is playing an important part in increasing your knowledge. That is good. But long time ago Jesus at the age of 12 was wise enough to talk with the Jewish teachers. He answered their questions with certainty. Jesus was filled with all the wisdom in earth and in heaven.

God wants us to be filled with all the wisdom. He also said in the Bible if one is lacking in knowledge, he should ask the Lord for wisdom. I believe that nowadays almost all children are attending school. We get good knowledge from the school. Beyond that you can read newspapers, good magazines and books. You can also talk and share your ideas with educated elders. Good TV channels are also sources of knowledge. God has blessed us with so much knowledge.

But how we are using our knowledge is important. Scientists of the previous centuries invented many machines and appliances which made our life more comfortable. Likewise we can make a contribution to our society. Use your brains. Think in the right way. Increase your creativity. By this way we can change our society. We can change the world also.

We need different types of knowledge. Then only we can live successfully in this world. In the Bible we see that Jesus answered every question and dealt with every situation he faced. He was never confused, never turned back. Each and every situation he passed.

We have to acquire the worldly knowledge. It is more important to acquire spiritual knowledge. We have to go to Sunday school, and learn Bible verses and stories. We have to obey what the Bible says, so that we can live a good life in the society. We have to learn how to pray, how to behave, etc. If we love the Lord, we have to grow according to what He says.

Elders will help us to grow in this way. There are so many great people who acquired this wisdom and dedicated their lives to God. The Apostle Paul was a great scholar. His writings show his deep knowledge and understanding about spiritual truths, which help us to grow spiritually. There are good doctors who travel to different parts of the world to serve poor, suffering people. Dr. Muralidhar, the President of the Inter Collegiate Prayer Fellowship is a living example. He serves among the adivasis in Kerala.

When you acquire enough knowledge and wisdom, it is time to use it for serving humanity. In India, especially in North India, many villages are in the darkness of illiteracy, superstition and poverty. There is no development in such villages, and are economically and culturally backward. People live there in pathetic conditions. Growing in knowledge and wisdom must compel us to do something for our country. Otherwise our wisdom is of no use.

Dear children, let us use the God given wisdom and knowledge to serve such suffering people in our country. There are many dedicated people in our villages who serve the suffering people, by education, health-care, etc. Christians who serve such people have made a difference in Indian villages. They have shown the love of God to them. Now it is our turn to grow in wisdom and knowledge, like Jesus, and contribute something for our society. Prayer: “Dear Lord, help us to grow in wisdom and knowledge, and then serve our society.” May God bless you!
