There is nothing like water to keep you cool. Drink
plenty of clean, safe water to keep your systems working
fine. In Delhi’s or Nagpur’s heat you may not feel like
drinking plenty of water. Soon after you drink, you will
that your mouth has gone dry – especially if you are in
the hot sun. Therefore, carry small fruits (such as
grapes or oranges or litchi) with you. As your mouth
becomes dry, pop in a fruit!
Mango Milk Shake
It’s raining mangoes in India. This season seems to have
yielded a bumper crop. This is when you should have a
refreshing glass of mango milk shake!
Ingredients
-
flesh of 3 ripe mangoes
-
6
cups milk
-
Optional: At least 3 Tablespoons of sugar; you may
add more. For a healthier option, avoid sugar. Add
honey instead. Add a tinge of salt, if you prefer.
10 crushed ice cubes
Directions
1. Blend all the ingredients in a blender. Serve
cold.
Prepare a bird bath
Take a wide-mouthed vessel and fill it with water. Leave
it on the terrace or balcony of your house. In the
scorching heat of India’s summer, this is enough to
attract thirsty birds. You could even leave a snack of
nuts or grains for them. (Change the water daily to
prevent breeding of mosquitoes.)
Donate Old Clothes, Toys or Books
Make sure that you donate your old books, clothes and
toys to needy people. There may be needy children who
wonder how they will meet the expenses of the coming
school year. Save up some of your pocket money and
donate it or buy books, water bottle bottle or a bag for
a needy child!
Memorise Scripture
Summer holidays is the best time for our young friends
to memorise Scripture. The psalmist hid God’s word in
his heart so that he should not sin against God! Commit
to memory your favourite psalms and other Scripture
passages. You could memorise entire books too.
Make sure that you recite these passages frequently.
Once your school or college starts next academic year,
recite these passages at least once a week to ensure
that you do not forget these.
Cool Cottons
People often think that they should wear minimum
clothing to beat the Indian summer. This may be true in
the case of highly humid coastal areas. However, in arid
regions, it is best to cover your body. Scientists have
shown, using heat sensing cameras, that the parts of the
body that are exposed are warmer than the parts that are
well covered. Avoid going in the hot sun between 10 am
and 2 pm. If you must, cover yourself well.
