The last
days of his life was spent by singing his favorite
praise and worship songs along with his friends and
family. At the stroke of midnight on April 24, 2010,
Binu went to be with the Lord he loved so deeply and
spent a lifetime sharing with all he came across. He is
now safe in the arms of Jesus, free forever from all
sickness, pain or sorrow.
Binu was born on 31st
October, 1969 to K. V. Mathew & Annamma Mathew and as a
sibling to Mini - a God fearing family, in Korba
(erstwhile Madhya Pradesh & now Chattisgarh). Binu's
early school years were in Korba, and from his ninth
grade onwards, he studied at Chandrapur, Maharashtra. As
a young boy with an astute mind and sharp memory, he
never worried about academics or struggled to prepare
for examinations. His thorough conceptual understanding
earned him consistently high test scores throughout
school and since the third grade, he began expressing
his desire to enter the field of engineering. He also
had a strong passion for vehicles and learnt to drive
the jeep at a mere 12 years. His keen observation and
spatial orientation enabled him to recall directions and
guide others accurately even after taking a route just
once.
Childhood Spiritual Training
When he was 9 years, Binu's mother fondly
remembers the conversation she had with him in the
kitchen while preparing dinner, which influenced him to
stand up in church the following Sunday and testify
Jesus as his Saviour and Lord. The first among his
church peers to make this decision, it inspired many of
the others towards similar commitments in the days
ahead. When it came to Scripture, he only had to learn a
Bible verse once to ensure it stayed in his memory. His
parents raised him with a strict discipline to never
shirk church services and this stayed with him through
his adult years as well.
Since childhood, Binu was always peace-loving,
well-conne cted with a strong circle of friends and
steered clear of enmity.
College Years
Binu completed his Diploma in Electronics,
during which he took water baptism. He was among the
only two of his batch to pass the final examinations and
bring repute to his institution with a first class.
Immediately after this he entered the second year of his
Bachelor in Engineering. The following year, at 21 years
of age, he was diagnosed with leukemia, which proved a
crucial turning point in his spiritual life and he drew
closer to God than ever before.
Accompanied by his father, he went to Bombay for expert
consultation on his condition and their conversations
there led him to decide to rely on God fully and not
worry about his health. As a result, he never let the
diagnosis dull his enthusiasm in his studies and future
goals.
Initial Days of Career
Not wanting to idle away any days after completing his
education, he decided to move to Delhi to look for a job
and took up a very simple job as a sales executive.
During his two years there, he made it a practic e never
to accept commission on the job and his father proudly
recalls his supervisor's commendation on seeing Binu's
travel reimbursement form quoting the exact amount to
the paisa. His integrity in the smallest of details won
the privilege of joining back as an employee if ever he
chose to in the future. During this period however,
Binu's heal th deteriorated and he went home to Chandrapur to recuperate for 3 months.
Transition to Bangalore and Christian Ministry
In 1994, Binu moved to Bangalore and he became
associated with the Indian Pentecostal Church,
Lingarajpuram. He participated in the ministries of
Sunday School as well as reached out to the youth
through Pentecostal Young Peoples' Association (PYPA)
and Inter-Collegiate Prayer Fellowship (ICPF).
As a leader, he was particularly gifted in motivating
people and networking with his inspiring personality,
optimistic outlook to life and words of encouragement.
In 1997, his parents shifted to Bangalore after his
father's retirement and they moved to their present
house two years later.
Marriage and Calling to Village evangelism
In the summer of 2000, Binu married Sheeba. In December
of the same year, Binu received a vision from God and in
response, they dedicated themselves as a family for
village evangelism. As a husband, he was very loving,
caring and gave the due respect Sheeba deserved. He was
a source of encouragement and motivated his family to
spend time in prayer. As a father, he would take the
time to play with Angeline and would teach her from
Scripture.
Binu joined Wilson Thomas who pioneered work in villages
and together with Pastor K.S. Samuel and Sabu Paul, they
started the Village Reach India (VRI) organization to
share the gospel of Christ with the Kannadiga people. He
learnt Kannada to minister among the local people and
used to sing Kannada worship songs with great
enthusiasm. Instances of persecution by the mob in
Muthuwadi and Kanakapura failed to dampen their earnest
passion to spread the Good News.
In 2008, in obedience to God's specific vision to go to
all the districts of Karanataka, Binu was able to
journey to and stay in all 28 districts, fasting and
praying for the spiritual revival of the people.
Professional diligence and ethical character
He began his career in Bangalore with a smal l job that
did not pay enough for even his rent. But in 6 months'
time, his dedication to task and to the company secured
him various promotions. Even at his most recent company, VXL eTech Ltd., his father recalls how he joined as a
junior executive and over the last 12 years, rose to the
rank of General Manager.
Life of Discipleship
The crux of Binu's ministry and life was the
vibrant personal relationship he shared with Jesus. Rain
or shine, healthy or sick, one discipline he hardly
missed was his private time of prayer in the early hours
of every morning. He would wake up 4 am daily and climb
up to the upper room of his house for private prayer,
waiting for his prayer partners to join him in a
corporate time of prayer at 5 am. This he continued to
do right till the very end when he was weak and weary in
body. He maintained a list of others' prayer requests
and would pray with great intensity and tears for them.
He had a special heart for the sick and tried his best
to visit them, particularly those who were battling for
their lives and in many instances brought them to the
assurance of where they would spend their eternity.
Consequently, the parents & families of such
individuals, who experienced this peace, went on to
share this with others, who then asked for Binu to come
and pray for their loved ones who were similarly
afflicted.
He did his best to set aside Saturdays and Sundays
exclusively for prayer and ministry, protecting them
from other work and distractions. Fasting was also an
important spiritual discipline in his life. He would
begin the fast early Saturday before going for village
ministry and would break for meals only after the
worship service on Sunday. During these and other times
of extended fasting, he would forgo his medication,
relying on God's strength and grace. |
