 MANIPUR ON HINDUTVA RADAR

Christian organizations have urged the Chief Minister of Manipur, to curb the divisive Hindutva philosophy in the state. The Meitei Christians are most concerned after serial attack on three churches this week in Imphal west district.

The All India Christian Council summitted a memorandum to W. Ibobi, the CM calling for stern action. In 2004 and 2005, the Christian world and civil society was shocked at the many unreported attacks on Christians in Manipur. Over 10 churches were burnt down, pastors and mission workers were attacked. Two dead bodies were removed from cemetery and fundamentalists even reconverted the dead bodies back to Hinduism then. Some Rongmei Christians continue to suffer boycott under extra constitutional orders in some villages.

After a gap of almost five years, attack on Meitei Christian minority started in Phumlou, Phayeng and Taothong in Imphal west district in an organised and preplanned manner by some fundamentalists. In this week’s serial attacks, the attackers used same approach, in burning the all three churches by dumping straw and spraying the inflammable liquids on church furniture at night and fled from scene.
