MEEKNESS IS NOT WEAKNESS - M.K.Babu

The results of our Parliamentary election show that the people of India are done with political parties that polarise society and instigate violence based on religion, caste and class. India has rejected the penchant of certain groups to attack Christians indiscriminately and to brand every Muslim a terrorist. Moreover, young voters' global outlook also came in favour of the UPA, resulting in their overwhelming victory. Needless to say, it is a victory of Indian secular democracy over divisive forces that suppress the truth by money and muscle power. Contrary to expectations, the Congress led UPA swept the polls left, right and centre.

Dr. Manmohan Singh's meekness was pictured as his weakness; the NDA thought of playing it up as a trump card. Thank God, the Indian voters have become sensitive and discerning. Things are changing because there were days when people admired coarse hooligans and underworld kings as political leaders. The voters now prefer intellectual, gentle and servant leaders to goons. Dr. Singh's humility and meekness took over every arrogance and opportunism of his opponents. Meeknees, of course, is not to be mistaken for weakness.

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar's victory in Bihar is apparently people's approval to stopping Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi's entry in Bihar. It is obvious that the Bihar Chief Minister did not want to tarnish the image of secularism by allowing Gujarat Chief Minister make religious hatred speeches. Doubtless, it was a prudent and wise decision. Many praise the Gujarat CM Narendra Modi for administrative capacity and vibrant leadership. Who would find it very hard to run a state when supported by the religious majority of the state and by the business class? We must wait watch to see whether he will be successful in leading a nation of such diversity as India. Also, Orissa CM Naveen Patnaik's timely decision to break away from the BJP was warmly welcomed by the people of Orissa. Though Kandhamal experienced an unprecedented attack on Christians, the people of Orissa did not forget to isolate the political parties with a hidden agenda.

Congress leaders are overwhelmed by the results since it went beyond their calculations and expectations. The clean image and effective administration of the PM, UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi's mature leadership and Rahul Gandhi's youthful leadership helped the Congress party to return to power. But there still is something they must not forget. For the Bible says about God: ".... He removes kings and establishes kings." (Daniel 2:21) There is no authority established under the heaven without the approval of the God of heaven and earth. It is He who establishes and removes rulers. The people of India prayed and trusted in God for a Government that will provide an atmosphere of freedom for everyone to exercise his/her constitutional right to profess and propagate his/her faith. Another Gujarat and Orissa can recur. Our people do not want any Government to be a silent spectator only to intervene after the loss of several hundred precious lives and property. Let the people appointed by God to positions of author
ity lead this nation scrupulously towards a better tomorrow.

I repeat. Meekness is not weakness. Christians in India love their country and pray for everyone in authority. It is our passion to see India's progress as her inhabitants live in love, joy and peace.
