When
talking to a friend who was undergoing a difficult
situation, he was lamenting 'why did this happen to me?'
'Why my family…? Why me? Questions like these are not
uncommon; all of us have asked such questions at some
point of times in our lives. When we don't have any
answers and when situation spins out of control, we
wonder and ask this question...why me? When we don't
understand what is going on we ask… why me? Some people
go a bit further and ask If God is just and if He really
loves me then why did this happen to me? If God is
sovereign, why did He allow suc h a tragic thing to
happen to me?
It is true that all of us are sometimes pushed to a
corner and our circumstances weigh us down. I was
thinking about this and noticed that things happen most
of the time because of our own deeds. I remember once a
classmate of mine caught for drunken driving, another
caught exceeding speed limit, both were fined. Another
student was caught cheating in exam, yet another was
caught vandalizing public property, another caught
travelling in train without a ticket… funnily enough all
of them said, 'everyone does it, why only I am caught
and punished?' We fall into trouble because we break a
law and put ourselves in trouble. Why should one blame
God for that? Sometimes we break God's moral law and get
into problems! The other day I saw a TV anchor saying
'Do whatever you want, but don't get caught? My friend,
if you do whatever you want, it is only a matter of time
before you get caught and the consequence can be severe!
How can we blame God, for our own foolish acts?
I am more bothered about certain situations that are
beyond our control and are not of our making. We are
sometimes forced to face such difficult times on which
we have no explanations or no immediate answers. Things
like what happened to Joseph of Old testament, Daniel or
Job. They had no idea why they were being dragged into
those difficult situations. I am not sure how many times
they cried out 'Why me?' We know now that God had a plan
to bless and lift them up but going through the process
without knowing anything about the end would have been a
very difficult and painful journey for them. Some of our
trials could be 'exams' conducted by God.
I remember teaching a fourth grade boy; we will have
long conversations before his exams. He knows it is
coming and dreads the very thought of it. I was
teaching, explaining and training him to face his
challenge. He asked me 'Sir, you know that all of us
children are so nervous and are fearful of our exams,
then why do they have exams?' I smiled at him and
encouraged him to continue studying and did not give him
a reply. After some time he looked at me again and said
'Idea sir, I have an idea, you know everything in the
book, why don't you write the exams instead of me?' All
of us are like this child asking God to face the exam
instead of us…but we forget that the very purpose of
exam is to move forward to a higher realm. God is not
helplessly watching us go through difficult situations
but He is busy training us to face the challenges, he is
beside us encouraging and empowering us to face it.
Next time before you ask… 'Why me?' Think! Is it from
your own making? Did you violate God's moral law? Did
you break rules of you school or college? Did you break
law of the land? All these will have consequences,
sometime severe! If you have broken these law/rules,
it's time to make quick amends and learn a lesson and
not to repeat it. If you think that you are in a
difficult spot for unknown reason, maybe it is a test
from God to make you grow and move to a higher level. Be
it physical, circumstantial or spiritual tests, ask
God's help and face it boldly without whining because,
He has a plan to bless you and lift you up and not to
harm you. Next time…instead of asking 'Why me?', Tell
Him 'It's me Lord, He me to face it!'
And we know that all things work together for good to
them that love God, to them who are the called according
to his purpose. (KJV) Romans 8:28. |
