 NATIONAL CONSULTATION HELD

New Delhi: The Christian community has been playing a major role in nation building through contribution in the fields of education and community development ever since India became independence. The false propaganda and the unprecedented violence against Christians in the recent years have caused great concern among the community. Since the general elections are near, the Christian community expect from the political parties to address their concerns in their manifestos. In this context a National Consultation on the eve of the general elections 2009 was held on February 23 at Believers Church Delhi Diocesan Centre.

Church leaders, intellectuals and thinkers from Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, and Calcutta took part in this meeting and discussed and drafted the issues that political parties to consider for their manifestos, campaigns and in choice of candidates.

Issues of great concern on discussion were Security of religious minorities, special demands for Orissa, Karnataka, erosion of minority rights, lack of secular space education land, cemeteries etc., economic deprivation, Dalit Christian rights, assault on right of Tribal Christians, Forest Act implications for Tribal and Dalit Christians, Women rights, Christian personal law reform delays, etc.

Archbishop Vincent M. Concessao chaired the meeting and All India Christian Council National Secretary John Dayal proposed and initiated the discussions.
