PATRIOTISM AND PEACE: THE BJP VERSION
Prime ministerial aspirant L K Advani and VHP’s international president Ashok Singhal are gentlemen that is when they are not talking politics. So too Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi, now riding the 'development' wagon is a patriot. But they don't seem to know yet that their good intentions to build a prosperous and peaceful nation are jeopardized by their own acts of omission and commission. Perhaps it may be a certain guilt that persuaded the peace-loving Singhal to appeal to the Muslim religious leaders the other day to issue a 'fatwa' calling upon Muslim groups to declare India as Dar-ul Aman (land of peace) as opposed to Dar-ul Harb (land where jihad is legitimate) READ MORE


FOCUS ON THE FAMILY FOR NATION BUILDING: OSCAR FERNANDES
New Delhi: Union Minister for Labour and Employment, Oscar Fernandes called for a renewed commitment to the family in an era of rampant individualism and degradation. “A family that prays together stays together,” he said. Referring to Mrs.Fernandes, he said, “We always go out together; we pray together... Strong families make a strong nation.” Mr.Fernandes was delivering the keynote address during the tenth anniversary celebrations of PTA at the Delhi Diocesan Community Hall on February 6, 2009. New Delhi: The Christian community has been playing a major role in nation building through contribution in the fields of education and community development ever since India became independence. The false propaganda and the unprecedented violence against Christians in the recent years have caused great concern among the community. Since the general elections are near, the Christian community expect from the political parties to address their concerns in their manifestos. Christian Solidarity Worldwide and the All India Christian Council welcomed a recent report from Asma Jahangir, the U.N. Special Rapporteur on freedom of religion or belief, on her mission to India in 2008. The report notes the "religious diversity of India and the positive impact of secularism" but warns that a "system of impunity emboldens forces of intolerance" and that extremist groups advocating religious hatred "have unleashed an all-pervasive fear of mob violence." BCI PASTORS ARRESTED
Chattisgarh: Ironically, a “Freedom of Religion” Act in the Indian state of Chattisgarh has led to the arrest of eleven pastors of the Believers' Church in Fatakpur, Sarguja. According to a correspondent of the Evangelical Fellowship of India (EFI) Rev.Akhilesh Edgar Hindu activists allegedly led by local Bharatiya Janata Party MLA Renuka Singh disrupted Christian Revival meeting organised by a local church. KANDHAMAL NIGHTMARE CONTINUES
Kandhamal, Orissa: Another Christian has been killed in Orissa's state Kandhamal district. A wave of fear and shock enveloped the district late last week with the discovery of the body of 45-year-old Hrudyananda Nayak on February 19. Ashis Parida, an EFI correspondent reported that Nayak left his village of Rudangia on February 18 to accompany his older sister to her village of Bandaguda, one and a half kilometres from Rudangia. It is alleged that an eyewitness saw Nayak being stopped by a group of extremists on his way back to the village and vanished thereafter. READ MORE

Mumbai: Tribals in Borvli have no access to health facilities, electricity of proper water supply. And now, they're battling a contagious skin disease. They live in Mumbai's backyard but lead a life far removed from all the markings of city life. More than 1500 tribals living in the fringes of Sanjay Gandhi National Park are geographically in the city, but live without access to health facilities, electricity, proper water supply and education. Missionary Nurse Isabel Hemingway used a degree in nursing from the former Philadelphia General Hospital to take her message of hope and healing around the world. The last remaining first cousin of author Ernest Hemingway, Isabel was born in China to missionary parents. READ MORE


RELICS OF 1ST AND 2ND TEMPLES UNEARTHED
Jerusalem (Israel): The Israel Antiquities Authority on February 23, 2009 announced the discovery of a large building dating to the time of the First and Second Temples during an excavation in the village of Umm Tuba in southern Jerusalem. The excavation was conducted by Zubair Adawi on behalf of the antiquities authority, prior to the start of construction there by a private contractor. The archaeological remains include several rooms arranged around a courtyard, in which researchers found a potter's kiln and pottery vessels. READ MORE


'SELF PATRIOTIC MOVEMENT' UNLEASHES PERSECUTION OF CHRISTIANS IN CHINA
Heilongjiang: Mrs.Cheng Fengying's house was seized illegally in January 2009 by officials from the Three-Self Patriotic Movement (TSPM), Religious Affairs Bureau (RAB) and Public Security Bureau (PSB) after years of continual persecution. Cheng Fenying, 54, is a preacher and evangelist. She, her husband Xie Tongxing and her 25-year-old son Xie Chengwei hosted a house church in their home with more than 200 members, but government officials threatened each believer to keep them away from the house church. MISSIONARY CHURCH DEPRIVED OF ITS RIGHT TO WORSHIP
Shanghai (China): It has been reported that a church conference was desrupted by the police and forced to stop the service in Wanbang Missionary Church. Pastor Liu Tongsu, an eyewitness to these events, says: "On the morning of February 10, 2009, six Chinese police officers and officials from the State Administration of Religious Affairs (SARA) visited the chief pastor Cui Quan of Wanbang Missionary Church of Shanghai and ordered him to cancel the 4th Seminar of Chinese Urban House Church Pastors Fellowship. New York: Faith-based charities, which provide an enormous array of private social services to the nation's sick, elderly and poor, are facing unprecedented cutbacks from one of their biggest funders: the government. JAMES BRADFORD TO BE GENERAL SECRETARY OF AG
Springfield (USA): James Bradford, pastor of Central Assembly of God in Springfield, is the new general secretary of the Assemblies of God, General Superintendent George O. Wood announced. Bradford, 56, was unanimously appointed by the Executive Presbytery following the resignation of John M. Palmer on February 13, 2009 after admitting to ethical misconduct. Bradford will assume the duties of the General Secretary's office effective immediately. However, he will also continue as pastor of Central Assembly through Easter.   READ MORE
