CHURCH CONDOLES MANGALORE CRASH DEATHS
May 24, 2010: The Catholic Church condoled the
death of 158 people who had boarded an Air India flight
that crashed in Mangalore on Saturday. President of the
Catholic Bishops' Conference of India (CBCI), Cardinal
Oswald Gracias, in a message of condolence, said the
Church in India grieved over the "great loss of life in
the air tragedy".

INCLUDE 'RELIGIOUS MINORITIES' IN ONGOING CENSUS:
AICC
May 17, 2010:
The ongoing 2011 census must include 'religious
minorities' just like the insertion of 'caste' in the
format, said a Christian council. In a letter to Prime
Minister Manmohan Singh, Abraham Mathai, general
secretary of the All India Christian Council (aicc),
underlined the need for including religious minorities
in the census.

EFICOR RECONSTRUCTING HOUSES OF RIOT-VICTIMS IN
BALIGUDA REGION
May 28, 2010: Two years after the anti-Christian
violence rendered them homeless, Christians in
Kandhamal's Baliguda region will now have a roof over
their heads. The Evangelical Fellowship of India
Commission on Relief (EFICOR) is currently building
about 337 houses in that region. Baliguda like other
adjacent blocks witnessed severe violence in the
aftermath of VHP leader Swami Laxmananda Saraswati's
murder.

GFA MISSIONARIES SAY IT IS 'PRIVILEGE' TO SUFFER
May 19, 2010 (Charlie Boyd, Christian Today):
Missionaries in training with Gospel for Asia have
spoken of the “privilege” they felt in suffering for
Christ after being attacked on their Bible college
campus in Mumbai, India, earlier in the month. Seven
students were seriously injured in the attack by
suspected anti-Christian extremists on May 9.

CHRISTIAN AID HELPS CYCLONE-HIT VICTIMS IN ANDHRA
May 21, 2010: Christian Aid partners in India
are preparing to respond after cyclone Laila hit the
coast of southern India's Andhra Pradesh state on
Thursday 20 May. The category one cyclone unleashed
heavy rains and 55-75mph winds across 777 villages. More
than one million people have been affected.

GATES FOUNDATION GIVES $5M FOR INDIA ANTI-SMOKING
EFFORT
Public Health Foundation
of India (PHFI) has been awarded five million dollars by
the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to strengthen the
National Tobacco Control Program in two states of India,
namely Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh, over a three year
period (2009-2012). Project STEPS will provide the much
needed district specific strategic response to the
rapidly escalating global tobacco epidemic in India.
