CBCI LAUDS CHRISTIAN MINISTERS IN GOVT
NEW DELHI: India's Catholic Christians are
happy over increased representation of the community in
the new government, with four of them being inducted
into the union council of ministers, says a report from
IndoAsian News Service. A.K. Antony is defence minister
while K.V. Thomas, Agatha Sangma and Vincent Pala are
ministers of state. The previous United Progressive
Alliance (UPA) government had three Christian ministers.

Delhi, April 28: SNEW DELHI: The All India
Christian Council has saluted the people of the country
for the decisive manner in which they have rejected
“divisive, communal and sectarian political forces” in
the general elections. In a statement, the Council said
their vote for secularism, stability and development,

mandate, the Indian National Congress, and the
architects of its victory, party president Sonia Gandhi,

CHRISTIANS FLEE PAKISTAN’S SWAT VALLEY AMID ASSAULT ON
TALIBAN
New Delhi: Pakistani Christians in Swat
Valley are caught between the Taliban and Pakistan’s
military as it assaults the stronghold where sharia
(Islamic) law. Nearly 15,000 troops have been deployed
in the picturesque Swat Valley in Pakistan’s North West
Frontier Province and across the border in Afghanistan.
Troops came after months of peace negotiations collapsed
between the Taliban insurgents who have imposed sharia
in the valley and the central government last month.
Hundreds of thousands of Pakistanis have fled the war
ravaged area for fear of a full military assault.

CHRISTIAN COUNCIL WELCOMES BINAYAK SEN'S BAIL
The National Council of Churches in India (NCCI)
welcomed the release of award winning renowned doctor
and human rights activist Dr Binayak Sen who was granted
bail by the Supreme Court on Monday. Dr Sen, who was
awarded the 2008 Jonathan Mann Award for Global Health
and Human Rights, was confined in Chhattisgarh jail for
two years over his alleged links with a banned group.
His detention has been declared in breach of
international law by Amnesty International.

Dozens of Christians who were sheltered in Kerala during
the Kandhamal violence will revert to their villages in
Orissa. Tentative plans are underway by the Kerala

Bishop
Dr Joseph Kariyil is the new Bishop of Kochi, replacing

Benedict XVI appointed three new Indian bishops.

FIVE CHRISTIANS ARRESTED ON CONVERSION CHARGES
Allegations of "forced conversion", last week, led to
the arrest of five Christians in Narsinghpur, Madhya
Pradesh. The Evangelical Fellowship of India (EFI)
reported that Hindu extremists on May 7 barged into a
prayer meeting attended by members of Jeevan Lal Church
and Campus Crusade for Ministry and injured some of the
attendees.

COMMUNAL OUFIT WORRIES ORISSA CHURCH LEADERS
Church leaders in Orissa have expressed apprehensions
over a growing outfit, which they say could be a
potential threat to the communal harmony and peace in
the State.In a letter to the chief minister of Orissa,
Naveen Patnaik, Catholic and Protestant leaders said "a
certain Laxmi Baba staying in Mahindragiri in Ganjam
district is organizing an outfit on communal lines and

SACRAMENTO, May 26: The California Supreme Court
rendered its opinion regarding Proposition 8, upholding
the traditional definition of marriage in the state
Constitution. By a vote of the people in the November,
2008 general election, Prop 8 has been in place in the
Constitution as Article 1, Section 7.5, stating Only
marriage between a man and a woman is valid or
recognized in California.

ABANDONS BIBLE QUOTES ON ITS REPORTS
Washington: The Pentagon said on May 18, 2009
that it no longer includes a Bible quote on the cover
page of daily intelligence briefings it sends to the
White House as was practice during the Bush
administration. Pentagon spokesman Bryan Whitman said he
did not know how long the Worldwide Intelligence Update
cover sheets quoted from the Bible. Air Force Maj. Gen.
Glen Shaffer, who was responsible for including them,

Washington DC: A few senators in the US have
written a letter to the Chinese premier asking him to
release Gao Zhisheng who went missing. Gao Zhisheng (b.
1966) is a Chinese army veteran and selftaught lawyer
who was disbarred, detained, and tortured by the Chinese
secret police after taking on human rights cases. These
included defending fellow activists, and religious
minorities like Falun Gong and Chinese underground
Christians. In 2006, he authored a memoir on his life
and work, the English translation of which, A China More
Just, was subsequently published in 2007. He was a
candidate for the 2008 Nobel Peace Prize. Gao went

blast in a church here which killed two Indians, a

ELECTS FIRST WOMEN MPS
Women
won four seats in the Kuwaiti parliamentary elections, a
historic first and one of several electoral surprises
that appeared to reflect a deep popular frustration with
the political deadlock in the oil rich gulf state of
Kuwait. The election of four women MPs could help
improve the situation for Christians and other
minorities in the Middle East, said an expert on Islam
and human rights. “Kuwait itself is usually seen as
moderately 'progressive,' and I think this is a big

Institute's Center for Religious Freedom, told The

KOREAN PASTOR EXPELLED FROM TIANJIN AND CHURCH ABOLISHED
TIANJIN - On May 16, 2009, the Office for
Religious Affairs in Jinghai county, Tianjin issued a
notice abolishing Immanuel Church and banning Pastor Han
Changxu, an ethnic Korean, from serving in the church.
Pastor Han Changxu, a native of Heilongjiang province,
was ordained as a pastor by the Presbyterian Church in
2008. He has been serving in Immanuel Church in Jinghai
county, Tianjin since 2004. During the 2008 Olympics,
authorities in Tianjin placed Pastor Han on surveillance
when they discovered he had contacts with missionaries
from South Korea.
