Once I
got an email invitation for an 'event' from a student,
who had invited many of us to a particular place to do
nothing. A bunch of people just thought that it was a
good idea to spend time doing nothing. I am not too sure
how they spent the whole day doing nothing as I could
not participate in that event. Long after that 'event'
was gone; I was still pondering in my mind and thought
how all of us spend time doing 'nothing', yet keeping
ourselves busy doing this sort of nothing. As I was
reading Bible, couple of verses by St. Paul spoke
precisely about this sort of doing 'nothing'. 'We hear
that some among you are idle. They are not busy; they
are busybodies. Such people we command and urge in the
Lord Jesus Christ to settle down and earn the bread they
eat.' (2Th. 3:11, 12) I learnt that this is just another
form of laziness! Laziness has consequences which are
severe, and Bible warns us against being lazy.
Laziness makes one poor (Proverbs. 10: 4)
Bible clearly tells us to be active and do constructive
things so that our daily needs are met by the work of
our hands. Because of their laziness, many educated
youngsters waste away their constructive capacities and
end up as a burden for the family. Many say that they
are preparing for competitive exams, and spend the whole
day going around and gossiping and open their books to
study for an hour before sleep and fall asleep on top of
their open books. After wasting several years, they
become frustrated, depressed and rebel against the
family and cause chaos in the family by wasting
resources. Many families struggle to finance their lazy
children who give nothing back to the family. If we
analyze carefully all this is because of the lack of
diligence and discipline. My friend, if you are one of
them…it's time to wake up!
Laziness makes one lose one's hard earned possessions
(Proverbs 12: 27)
The lazy man does not roast his game, but the diligent
man prizes his possessions. A hunter works hard to get
his game, after getting his game if he does not roast
it; he ends up spoiling it and goes hungry. As I was
reading this, I remembered Ajit a hard working student.
He worked hard and finished his master's degree and
secured admission to do higher studies abroad. He was
very happy about and was celebrating his achievement.
When time came to fill in his online application, he
partially filled it and felt too lazy to fill the
remaining. He kept on postponing, one fine day the last
date was over and website got locked and his application
was rejected! He ended up wasting an opportunity because
of his laziness. Do not take things slightly, one will
end up losing the race like the hare in the proverbial
'hare and the tortoise' story.
Laziness make one bury one's talents (Matthew 25: 26)
“His master replied, `You wicked, lazy servant!...” In
the parable of talents, when the master returns and
finds out that the man with one talent had buried his
talent, the master accuses him of being 'wicked and
lazy' and calls him worthless. This parable reminds us
how serious God is against laziness. It is possible that
we are given several good things from God, if we do not
use then as intended by God and bury them in our
laziness, it will be taken away from us. However, for
those who used their talents wisely, more and more were
given and they were elevated and adored by the master.
So friends, let's be diligent and make the most of the
time. Let's be good stewards and do our best. Let us
glorify God in whatever we do, be it in our work places
or in our schools and colleges. Let us not take time to
do nothing.
