 FIRST CONVICTION IN KHANDHAMAL
 

July 2, 2009: The fast-track court in Kandhamal District sentenced a 58-year, a tribal leader named Chakradhar Mallick, resident of Dampidhia village, Daringbadi block, Kandhamal who had set the house of Loknath Digal a man belong the same village on fire and threatened to kill him.

He was also accused of instigating other people in the village to set afire the houses that belonged to the people of the minority community. Chitta Ranjan Das the Judge of fast-track court-II found Mallick, also involved in other riot-related cases.

The court imposed a 2 year imprisonment on him, and in addition to that he was fined rupees one thousand. Ten thousand people have been named in the 827 cases registered in regard with the Khandhamal riots. Chargesheet has already been filed in 437 cases and investigations are in progress in other cases, including the case dealing with the rape of a nun.
