125 YEARS OF ST STEPHEN'S HOSPITAL
 New Delhi: ‘The Church exists for the love of
God and it exists on the love of God,’ thus began Dr
Sudhir Joseph, director of the St Stephens Hospital, his
short speech tracing the story and philosophy of the
hospital which has now existed for 125 years. The
occasion was the ‘thanksgiving and rededication service
on the afternoon of January 1, the start of the New Year
day.

Manmohan Singh said his government was conscious about

SC NOTICE TO CENTRE ON QUOTA FOR DALIT CHRISTIANS
New Delhi 1/7/2010: The Supreme Court issued
notices to the Union government on a petition filed by
All India Christian Federation challenging the validity
of clause 3 of the Constitution (Scheduled Castes)
order, 1950 (as amended from time to time), which denies
the benefits of reservation to SC converts to
Christianity, Islam, Jainism and Zoroastrianism.

CHURCH BACKS PROBE INTO CATHOLIC SCHOOL OVER GIRL'S
SUICIDE
NEW DELHI (UCAN) -- Church officials say they
will back a government investigation into Sacred Heart
School in Chandigarh, which expelled a girl a month
after she had been molested by a senior police officer.
The girl, Ruchika Girhotra, 14 at the time, subsequently
committed suicide.

EVANGELICAL BODY RECORDS 152 INCIDENTS OF
ANTI-CHRISTIAN VIOLENCE IN 2009
ChristianToday/ Jan 2, 2010 - The Evangelical
Fellowship of India (EFI) has recorded 152 incidents of
anti-Christian violence in 2009. In a report published
last month, EFI released the partial list of major
incidents that predominantly occurred in Karnataka,
Madhya Pradesh, Chattisgarh and Andhra Pradesh.

 THE WORLD'S TALLEST TOWER, ‘BURJ KHALIFA' IS 828
METRES (2,716.5 FT) HIGH
Dubai, UAE; January 4, 2010: The world's
tallest tower, developed by Emaar Properties, was
unveiled tonight to a crowd of thousands and the world
in a crescendo of fireworks, lasers and fountain
displays. The official height of the tower, unveiled as
'Burj Khalifa', was announced as 828 metres (2,716.5
ft).

MALAYSIAN CHURCH FIRE-BOMBED AHEAD OF MUSLIM PROTESTS
KUALA LUMPUR: A church in Malaysia has
been fire-bombed in an attack that gutted its ground
floor, church officials said on Friday, escalating a
dispute over the use of the word "Allah" by non-Muslims.
A fire department official said all stations were on
alert for more blazes at religious buildings, ahead of
planned nationwide protests on Friday by Muslim groups
angry over the use of the word as a translation for the
Christian "God."

have applauded a hospital's decision not to allow a
patient, who has been comatose for the past 36 years, to
die by withholding nutrition from her. Pro-euthanasia

be allowed to die in view of her prolonged “vegetative
state”.

Christians brought in the New Year with a challenge to
couple evangelism with social justice for the world's
poor. Students spent the final week of 2009 in St. Louis
at the Urbana 09 Missions Conference, where young people
from across the U.S. and Canada took part in worship
sessions and Bible studies, many of which focused on
refugees and how to share the gospel with homosexuals
and Muslims. Those who attended Urbana 09 report that it
was educational and worshipful.

MYANMAR: BIBLE PROGRAM GIVES HOPE TO THE DESPERATE
YANGON, JAN 6 (UCAN) -- A weekly
Bible-sharing program open to people of all faiths in
Yangon has saved at least one woman from suicide.
Matthias Rani, 58, a mother of two, had tried to take
her own life after being driven to despair by poverty.
"Unable to bear the burden, I planned three times to

Eritrean Christians have been released by authorities.

NEW THREAT DEVELOPS AFTER UN VOTE ON RELIGIOUS
DEFAMATION
The U.N. General Assembly has passed the non-binding
Defamation of Religion Resolution for the fifth year in
a row, reports MNN. However, support is eroding, says
Open Doors Advocacy Director Lindsay Vessey. The
Islamic-sponsored non-binding resolution passed with 80
votes in favor, 61 against and 42 abstentions. That
compared with 86 votes to 53, with 42 abstentions for a
similar text last year, and figures of 108-51-25 in
2007, the last time the measure commanded an absolute
majority of U.N. members.
