 BCI CONSECRATES SIX NEW BISHOPS

Thiruvalla, 7 Jan 2010: The Believers Church consecrated six new bishops at the St Thomas Cathedral. The new bishops were selected by the Synod Executive Coucil. They are Rev. B K Lukose (Kerala), Rev. C K Noucham (Myanmar), Rev. B. Sunderraj (Tamil Nadu), Rev. Anil Kumar Deb Varma (Tripura), Rev. Gopal Chhatri (Nepal), Rev. Emmanuel Juribu (Sikkim).

The Metropolitan bishop of Believers Church, Most Rev. K P Yohannan officiated at the special consecration service. Pastors and church members from various dioceses gathered at the headquarters for this event.

At 7:30 am, the bishop candidates were taken in a procession from the Believers Church Seminary campus to the St. Thomas Cathedral. Later, during the consecration, the Metropolitan bishop presented to each candidate a special ring that bore the emblem of the Believers Church. The Metropolitan then washed the feet of the newly appointed bishops following the example of Christ who displayed servant-leadership by washing the feet of his twelve disciples. The Church then presented each bishop with a copy of the Holy Bible.

After the service, a special meeting was held to felicitate the newly appointed bishops. Honourable Minister for Public Works, Mr. P J Joseph, inaugurated this meeting that was chaired by the Metropolitan bishop.

The Believers Church has churches in 13 Asian countries and their churches are organised under 25 dioceses. The church boasts of two million members. Their pastors and workers are trained in 54 minor seminaries and in the main seminary in Tiruvalla.
