Mumbai: The Bombay Municipal Corporation has
suspended one of its officials for misusing his powers
to destroy a heritage cross situated opposite Bandra
Talao.
The
heritage cross boasts of a history of nearly 150 years.
Had the attempt to demolish not been noticed by
concerned citizens, another Christian landmark in the
city would have disappeared without a trace. The Bombay
Catholic Sabha had registered a strong protest over the
incident.
The
BCS also organised a prayer meeting at the site on
February 16 at 7 pm. The meeting was well attended by
concerned citizens. Among some of the prominent
persons present for the prayer service were: Mr. Asif
Zakaria, Municipal Councillor of the Area, Mr Sudesh
Dube UpVibhag Pramukh of the Shiv Sena, Fr.Gerard
Rodricks, Parish Priest of St Peter’s Church, Fr. S.M.
Michael, Director - Institute of Culture, Ms Dapne
Warappen and Mr. Anil Joseph of H West Federation.
The BCS has several more
demands from the BMC.
-
The
arrest of the concerned official and criminal
proceedings to be initiated against him by the BMC/Police
Authorities
-
Contempt proceedings by the concerned Authorities in
view of the High Court judgement to maintain status
quo of all those Crosses prior to 1964.
-
BMC
must let the citizens know as to the reasons of such
abuse of power by the concerned official. The BCS
has threatened to launch a city-wide agitation if
the government failed to meet its demand within 48
hours.
