The
words 'blessing' and 'curse' are prevalent in every
society irrespective of its religion, language or
geographic location. Common belief is that blessing is
from God and the latter is from the devil. Actually,
both blessing and curses come from God
- blessings for the obedient and curses for the
disobedient.
Any disobedience is sin. Humankind is puzzled about what
constitutes sin. Therefore we seek ready-made solutions
to blot out our guilt and rid ourselves off of the
repercussions of the wrongdoings, providing a temporary
solace our souls.
We should take sin very seriously. The Word of God says
that “the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is
eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Rom. 6:23). Sin
cannot be washed away by good deeds. And sin brings
along a curse. As long as the power of sin rules over
someone's life, curse would prevail in that life. The
remedy is found only in Jesus Christ who has done away
with sin at the cross through His atoning sacrifice. God
opened the way of salvation through Jesus Christ and met
mankind's greatest need.
“If our greatest need had been information, God would
have sent us an educator. If our greatest need had been
technology, God would have sent us a scientist. If our
greatest need had been money, God would have sent us an
economist. If our greatest need had been pleasure, God
would have sent us an entertainer. But our greatest need
was forgiveness, so God sent us a Savior” (Charles
Sell).
The apostle Paul in his epistle to Ephesians says God
declared blessings ithe redeemed in the heavenly realms.
This is like a government that declares grants and
facilities to the people of India from the Parliament
house; yet, effect of that proclamation can reaches
every citizen in the nation. God has declared blessings
on our spiritual, material, physical, mental and
emotional areas of our life. “Praise be to the God and
Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in
the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in
Christ” Eph 1:3. There is no reason why a redeemed
person should think that he/she is still under some
‘generational’ curse! Why should we discount the effect
of Jesus’ death and resurrection on us when we initially
trusted Christ?
In matters of wisdom and understanding the Word says,
“with all wisdom and insight He has made known to us the
mystery of his will.” (Eph. 1:8) There are millions
people who have neither loved or been loved. They live
like machines in this world complaining that no one
loves them. God has lavished His love on those who are
redeemed through the blood of Jesus Christ so that we
sense and receive love from others and vice versa. “How
great is the love the Father has lavished on us, that we
should be called children of God! And that is what we
are! The reason the world does not know us is that it
did not know him.” 1Jn 3:1
Material blessings too are in store for the children of
God. “And God is able to make all grace abound to you,
so that in all things at all times, having all that you
need, you will abound in every good work” 2Cor. 9:8.
God’s Word says in all things at all times we will have
all that we need. Blessings are not restricted to
material blessings. He wants us to be a blessing in all
possible ways to as many people as possible. The Word
promises that we will abound in every good work. In
other words, we will have plentiful so that we can help
someone in need.
Every tree is stationery. Yet, it renders blessings to
many beings - the birds make their nests in it; leaves
and flowers display grandeur; fruits are food to many;
its shade refreshes the weary. Human beings are the
crown of God’s creation. Humans who can think, speak,
walk, work, weep, laugh, etc. We should be able to help
others in greater measure.
Do we have an abundance out of which we may help others?
How can we inherit God’s blessings? It is as simple as
drinking a glass of water. “And without faith it is
impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to
him must believe that he exists and that he rewards
those who earnestly seek him” (Heb 11:6) Faith in God is
indispensable. There is no quick-fix solution for our
needs. God has made a way for us. We need to believe in
Jesus Christ and become God's children. There is no
greater state of blessedness than that.
