Davangere:
On 24th January 2010 at around 9:30, a group of 20
members of the Hindu right wing organisation Rashtriya
Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) led by Rudresh and Basavaraju
barged into the Indian Evangelica Mission (IEM) located
at Bidirikere village in Jagalur taluk of Davangere
district. They attacked Raju (28) and others during the
Sunday service. The gang was led by Prakash, Madivalappa
and Basavaraju of Bidarakere.
Twenty five Christians were present that Sunday. During
the service, RSS men disrupted the service by
criticizing Christian beliefs, chanting "Jai Sri Ram".
The men falsely accused the believers of forced
conversion and viciously beat Raju and other believers.
They then snatched Bibles and prayer books from the
helpless men, women and children and burnt them to
ashes. Later, the vandals dragged Raju to Miggur
village, 5 Km from the Church, and attacked other
Christians who attempted to rescue Raju from the mob.
A complaint was lodged in Jagalur Police Station against
perpetrators. On the 27th of January, Pastor Manjunath
was directed to appear before the Station officer of
Jagalur Police Station for further inquiries.
